History of The Piano Studio

The Piano Studio is a full service recording studio that specializes in piano-based soloists and ensembles.

We offer two world-class pianos to choose from - a Steinway 9' concert grand and a Baldwin 7' studio grand. Both pianos are professionally voiced and regulated on a regular basis and kept in "concert ready" condition to satisfy the most discriminating pianist.

These truly exceptional instruments reside in a spacious 700 ft² live tracking room with elegant hardwood floors and vaulted ceilings; the engineers are discreetly downstairs in the 600 ft² control room, leaving you comfortable to be yourself and sound your best.

While we do specialize in producing first class piano tracks, we love to record everyone! Violinists, classical chamber groups, solo cellists and acoustic guitarists, jazz sextets, opera divas, chinese guzheng players, and rock bands, along with many others, have chosen to record at The Piano Studio.

We have recently relocated to a wonderful new space about ten minutes North of downtown Seattle, in a quiet suburb full of old growth trees and unrestricted parking all around. The current location follows eight successful years on Seattle's Capitol Hill, and one year in our original space in Albuquerque N.M.

The studio is owned and operated by pianist Martin Buff, but sessions are available with long time house engineer Alex Rose and we welcome independent engineers.

New Microphones for Vocal/Piano

We've acquired some great new equipment!

Martin Buff

At The Piano Studio we are always looking to improve the recording quality we can offer to pianists, vocalists, and ensemble musicians. A big part of this is the equipment we use, and we are pleased to say we've recently expanded our microphone collection!

The biggest new acquisition for the studio has been a pair of Mojave MA-200 tube microphones. Based on the Neumann U47 (with a K67 capsule) these large diaphragm condenser microphones were designed by David Royer in 2001. We've been testing them on the pianos and on a few vocalists we've had in the studio recently. They add a beautiful richness and soften any sibilance on vocals, perfect for a warm jazz color. We also like the way they sound up close on the piano - filling out the mid-range wonderfully.

Another recent acquisition has been a set of three AKG 414's. An all around versatile microphone, we've primarily been using these as room (far distance) microphones on the piano. This captures some of the natural acoustic reverb of our beautiful space. We also sometimes use them as backup vocal microphones.

Lastly, we are currently testing out a Pearl MS 8CL microphone above the piano. With its integrated mid/side capsule, it allows us to add some rich depth to our standard piano setup and gives us control over the width of the stereo signal.

Be sure to check out our full Equipment List!
